President's Letter September 2018

Dear Quilters and LIMQG Members,

I hope you had an enjoyable summer filled with fun, family and friends. While there have been no LIMQG meetings over the summer I can assure you your board has had several meetings and have outlined and planned an exciting 2018-2019 quilting season.

All the board members are 100% dedicated to nurturing and expanding the group’s community outreach and charity involvement.

First up we have our first trunk show presentation for the members of Long island Quilting Society on October 15, 2018. I can tell you as a 2 year member of LIQS their membership is very excited for our show and talk about modern quilting. In fact, 3 members of LIQS are now members of LIMQG and see the benefit and similarities of our diverse quilting styles. Please make sure you submit a quilt for the show and if you have, please bring your quilt to the September meeting so it can be cataloged and added to the presentation in time. ALL work I have seen in our group qualifies as Modern Quilting and will be welcome with opened arms.

Many changes have been made to the Modern Quilt Guild website (www.themodernquiltguild.com) and as paid LIMQG member you have full access to its resources, education and inspiration.

As you know our “Comfort” quilt is on the QuiltCon website and I sent out an email last week—- sorry—-I could not wait until the September meeting I was so excited. (LOL)

Please remember we have an adjusted first meeting date of September 12th at the Dix Hills Arts League so as to not interfere with the Jewish holidays.

I look forward to seeing my quilting family and friends at our first meeting and unveiling our 2019 Charity Quilt for QuiltCon.

JANUARY 2018

QuiltCon Charity Quilt

We have finished the QuiltCon Charity Quilt! After the quilt debuts at QuiltCon 2018 in Pasadena, California, we will donate it to East End Hospice. It is our hope that the quilt will used as a raffle quilt so that they may raise money for the Children's camp called  Camp Good Grief.  This camp is a bereavement camp for grieving children and teenagers.  

This is their mission statement which appears on our quilt:

"Camp Good Grief. Where children and teenagers begin to heal."

Guest Speaker: Vicki Field

Vicki Field is a musician, artist & teacher. She gave a lecture on Color Theory and how it's use in your artwork and design.

She demonstrated the use of primary and secondary  colors through watercolor paints, her primary medium. It was interesting to see color through a painter's palette.

It is very important to keep color in mind when you are designing your quilts.  

 Warm color vs Cool Color. Color can set the mood of your artwork . Warm colors (red, orange & yellow) will make you feel vibrant and energetic. It draws the viewer into the artwork.  While cool colors (blue, green purple) make you feel calm and relaxed. Cool colors will make your artwork recede.

It was interesting to look at the use color through painters eyes. She feels that artists, whether their paint is watercolor or fabric, should use color to tell a story and to  draw the viewer into  and around their piece of work.

December Meeting Recap

Happy New Year

Have you started writing down your New Year's Resolutions? Do they include finishing all or some of your U.F.O.'s?  My list of UFO's is very long and I hope that it will become shorter by the end of 2018 (and that I do not add any more projects to the list!) . I can always hope!
