Denyse Schmidt came to the Long Island MGQ on July 16th to give a lecture, trunk show and a workshop!
 It was an amazing day to learn from a quilting legend!

Denyse taught her Pure Improv workshop to 20 students that came from as far as Canada to participate! 

It was an amazing day had by all. Denyse has encouraged all of us to step outside of our comfort zone and to be free -- all while working within certain constructs of design and color. FEBRUARY Meeting Recap

We started off the meeting with Show and Share:

Maureen has been very busy with Tula Pink's 100 block challenge.  She plans on quilting each long section, one at a time.  When quilting is complete, she will join the three sections together.  A "quilt-as-you-go" project. Looking forward to seeing this quilt finished!

ROUND ROBIN MEDALLION REVEAL

  After several rounds of adding 10", 8", 6" then a final 4" borders the challenge Medallion quilts were revealed.  They are amazing!  The creativity and originality that went into the design of these borders was fantastic.  We have a very talented group of quilters!  If you would like to see what the original block looked like check out June 2016 blog by clicking here:  Medallion Blocks

 MARIO AND Electric Quilt 7

Mario was kind enough to demonstrate Electric Quilt 7 (EQ7) quilt design software program. This program is used to design blocks, borders, sashings and quilts.  It contains lots of tools for you to become a successful designer.  The EQ7 contains libraries filled with fabrics that you can use to create blocks and quilts using currnt fabric to give you and idea of what the block will actually look like when sewn together. March Meeting:

Tutorial on the Interleave quilt by Lorraine.

For the mini quilt, you will need 4 pieces of fabric measuring 9.5" x 18 each, a fat quarter for backing and material for binding.

Prep Work @ Home:
Please place the Dark and Light Fabric pieces right sides together and sew a seam down both of 18" edges to form a tube (leave the short edges open). Do the same for the medium fabric pieces.



Supplies to bring: Fabric that you sewn, scissors, rotary cutter, cutting mat, 24" long ruler, fat quarter for the backing, marking pencil/pen, pins, small pieces of paper for numbering.
There will be a $ 5 fee for batting and grid fabric that Lorraine will supply

November Meeting Recap

The November Challenge was to create a mug rug utilizing just two colors. What a nice collection of Mug Rugs!  Various techniques were used including paper piecing, half square triangles and improvised piecing.  

Round Robin Medallion-round 2

This last round of the medallion quilt was challenging.  The border added this round measured 8 1/2" unfinished. Figuring out the math to add a particular width and length of border can challenging. I used my calculator a bit for this project! It is often difficult working on someone else's project, but rewarding as well.

The photographs below will show how the added borders are transforming the center medallions into beautiful quilts.

   

The third and final round of this project is to add a 4" border (4 1/2" unfinished).  This final round will be due at the February 15, 2017 meeting.

Show and Share

Mario shared his latest project: improvised piece quilt top with embroidered snowflakes that he will turn into a holiday stocking...Mario please take a picture of the stocking when complete!

Suzi pieced to together a graphic improvised quit top.  This was her first improvised project. She especially liked sewing the free formed curves! Great job.

Kim showed her latest improvised quilt inspired by a trip into Manhattan. She used invisible thread to do some matchstick/straight line quilting. Beautiful!

Inspiration Boards

Janet and Lorraine shared a technique to get our creative juices flowing. By looking though magazines for pictures of what "speaks" to us, we were able to create a board that will help us discover what colors, color combinations, shapes, styles etc that we are drawn to.  Using the inspiration boards, we can design our next project. 

So finish up your inspiration boards and post them to Instagram by December 2nd.  We will exchange names for the holiday gift swap based upon these posts. Please hash tag your post with #limqg. 

Kim will create a list of members who have posted their boards and randomly choose names to swap gifts with.

January holiday gift challenge will be to create a gift for your randomly selected LIQGM.  The inspiration boards that have been created and posted, will be a starting point to create the holiday gift. So, please use some design element from the member's board to make the gift. These gifts will be exchanged at our holiday party/meeting on January 18, 2017.
