Goals and Resolutions 2015

As we wind down from the holiday hustle and bustle, visits with good friends and family, and our abundant food feasts, we often set some resolutions for the new year.  So I ask all of you, do you have any quilting goals for 2015? Complete a project, start a new one, try a new skill?  Or maybe donate some of your time and skills to helping others?

Why not join us at our next meeting, Tuesday, January 20th... Come volunteer and have some fun!

We plan on making pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer, www.conkerrcancer.org..  Please visit their website for more information, or click link below for project instructions.

Please check the fabric requirements and bring all necessary supplies to the meeting including cutting board, iron, your machine, and an extension cord.  Please note the fabric does NOT have to be for children, bring any fabric you like!  If you have time to cut the fabric prior to the meeting, that would speed things up!

Also, bring your BOM, charity block, and your show and tell too. Looking forward to seeing you there!  Bring a friend!

November Guest Speaker

Hello Ladies,
I hope you are all enjoying this chilly Fall weather.  Between the cold in the air and the upcoming holidays, it's a great time to stay in and stitch away!  But not tonight, because tonight is Girl's Night Out!  The Long Island Modern Quilters are very excited to meet Jessica Alexandrakis, our guest speaker for November.  Jessica is a New York based quilter and blogger.  She has been quilting since 1994, and loves scrap quilting, English paper piecing, and free pieced letters.  You can visit her blog here:

Welcome Back ~ September Meeting

Hello Ladies!

We hope you had a wonderful, relaxing summer.  It seems like only yesterday that days were long and sunny, yet today, the air is crisp and clean, and fall is finally here.

Last Tuesday, September 16, 2014, LIMOD met at the Lutheran Church in East Northport to discuss the new and exciting ideas in store for our Fall 2014-Spring 2015 year.

One item discussed was the September 2014 Block of the Month (BOM).

This year's BOM will be a tutorial from the blog: In Color Order (www.incolororder.com).  Click on Block of the Month or look in the tutorials section of the blog. Below is the direct link.

We will start with September's block and go from there.  Make your blocks in any color/fabric you'd like (look at the color values in the finished quilt for inspiration.  Bring in your finished block each following month to show.

Finished, the BOM will be 12.5"

Click the link below to take you directly to the September BOM instructions:

In addition, we will be doing a charity BOM.  If you wish to participate, each month, the same BOM (above) will be made in a specific color way that will be given to you.  For September, the charity block must be made in Medium Gray/Red/White (Gray outside triangles, Red middle trapezoids, and White background). Please use saturated (rich) colors and contemporary fabric: solids or prints.  Each participant will be entered into a raffle.  Depending on the number of participants, there may be more than one winner.  If there are not enough participants, the blocks will be saved until year end, to combine to make a scrappy charity quilt.  The winner(s) of the raffle will get blocks that month to be sewn into a quilt (on their own time schedule) and donated to their chosen charity.  The winner(s) will explain what charity they are going to donate their quilt to.  They will also take a photo of the quilt, when it's finished, to share.

A second item we discussed was the LIMOD's October charm swap.  After we "swap", a challenge will be given to be completed for the following (November) meeting.
Guidelines for the Charm Swap:
  •  Cut Twelve (12) 5-inch x 5-inch squares of quilt shop quality fabric from a SOLID fat quarter.  Please, no fabrics from Joann's, Michaels, etc.
  •  Put your twelve (12) 5-inch squares in a gallon plastic zip bag or similar which will keep the fabric nice and flat.
  •  Bring up to five (5) packets to the October meeting.  You take home as many packets as you bring.
  •  At the meeting, see the swap coordinator to drop off your packets and get your pick numbers.
  • Can't be at the October meeting? Send your packets with a trusted friend and we'll pick for you!
  • At the October meeting we'll fill you in on the "challenge" guidelines for what you will be doing with these bundles!
  •  Not sure how to cut the perfect charm? Try visiting Elizabeth Hartman's blog for an excellent tutorial for cutting accurate charm squares from a fat quarter:

Please feel free to contact us with any questions... Looking forward to swapping with you at the October meeting~ Tuesday October 21, 2014.

June Program

If you are like me, you are probably super busy with your gardens, lawns, pools, and last minute (horribly delayed) spring cleaning, but relax, it can all wait. Quilting is more important :)
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, June 17, and it is going to be an interesting one - we are having a guest speaker and a party.

Our guest speaker will be Andrea Deal, "a weaver, quilter, teacher, embroidery and print designer and all-around fabric junkie." Those of you who are not familiar with Andrea's work and would like to find out more about our guest speaker, please go to her web site www.andreadeal.com. There is some serious quilting eye candy on her web site.

Our party is going to be a pot luck, so please bring your favorite dish, sweet or savory, to share with your fellow quilters.

Enjoy the beautiful weather, and I hope to see you all soon. As always, if you have any questions, please direct them to one of our board members. They will be more than happy to help you.

Happy quilting!

Tasha
