Holiday Party Fun!

We had a wonderful time at our holiday party, lots of good food and conversation.  The best part of the evening was the exchange of tips/tricks/tools.

There were a few people who love the Bloc_loc ruler used to square up half square triangles accurately.

Amy loves her new Oliso Pro Iron:

Mario gave some great ideas on how to thread your sewing machine so as not to have your thread tangled.




Judy demonstrated her favorite way to add binding to a quilt.
Karen talked about scrapbooking quilts that she has made through the years.

January Meeting

Happy New Year!  2017 will be the best quilting year ever!

The next meeting will take place on January 18, 2017. 



Theme:  Holiday Celebration

We will be celebrating the holiday season this meeting by bringing a savory or sweet food to share with our group. Also, for those of you who signed up for the holiday swap, please bring in your wrapped gift.

During the meeting we will be sharing a tool, trick or tip with the group. Think about a special tool that you use to create the a quilt block or a tip that will makes your quilting easier.  Did you find an easier way to create a perfect point? Think about a tip, trick or tool to share with us!

As always we will be having Show and Share. Bring in some recent projects that you are working on, either finished or unfinished. 


REMINDER:  The final round of the medallion quilts are due at the February Meeting on 2/15/2017.  The final border is  4".

Decemeber meeting update

Just a reminder that our meeting will be taking place this Wednesday, December 21 at the Art League of Long Island in Deer Park. (7:30 PM)

We will be having some member lead demonstrations on binding, label making and flange.  Please bring some label making supplies to the meeting.

Also if you weren't able to make an inspiration board but would still like to participate in the Holiday Gift exchange, please email LIMQG to let us know that you would like to participate.  We will exchange names at the meeting this Wednesday. 

The Holiday Gift Exchange and Party will take place at our meeting on January 18, 2017.

Please bring in your Inspiration boards to the meeting so that you can explain what inspires you!

November Meeting Recap

The November Challenge was to create a mug rug utilizing just two colors. What a nice collection of Mug Rugs!  Various techniques were used including paper piecing, half square triangles and improvised piecing.  

Round Robin Medallion-round 2

This last round of the medallion quilt was challenging.  The border added this round measured 8 1/2" unfinished. Figuring out the math to add a particular width and length of border can challenging. I used my calculator a bit for this project! It is often difficult working on someone else's project, but rewarding as well.

The photographs below will show how the added borders are transforming the center medallions into beautiful quilts.

   

The third and final round of this project is to add a 4" border (4 1/2" unfinished).  This final round will be due at the February 15, 2017 meeting.

Mario shared his latest project: improvised piece quilt top with embroidered snowflakes that he will turn into a holiday stocking...Mario please take a picture of the stocking when complete!

Suzi pieced to together a graphic improvised quit top.  This was her first improvised project. She especially liked sewing the free formed curves! Great job.

Kim showed her latest improvised quilt inspired by a trip into Manhattan. She used invisible thread to do some matchstick/straight line quilting. Beautiful!

Inspiration Boards

Janet and Lorraine shared a technique to get our creative juices flowing. By looking though magazines for pictures of what "speaks" to us, we were able to create a board that will help us discover what colors, color combinations, shapes, styles etc that we are drawn to.  Using the inspiration boards, we can design our next project. 

So finish up your inspiration boards and post them to Instagram by December 2nd.  We will exchange names for the holiday gift swap based upon these posts. Please hash tag your post with #limqg. 

Kim will create a list of members who have posted their boards and randomly choose names to swap gifts with.

January holiday gift challenge will be to create a gift for your randomly selected LIQGM.  The inspiration boards that have been created and posted, will be a starting point to create the holiday gift. So, please use some design element from the member's board to make the gift. These gifts will be exchanged at our holiday party/meeting on January 18, 2017.

November Meeting Reminder

Next Wednesday,November 16, is our next meeting.

Our Medallion Challenge quilt 8" round is due!  If you are unable to attend the meeting, but have finished your round, please send me an email @ sewbusy65@hotmail so I can arrange to pick the quilt top up and bring it to the meeting for you.

The challenge for this month was to create a mug rug in two color ways. I am looking forward to seeing what you have designed and having fun swapping the rugs

Also we will be making an inspiration board at the next meeting.
